CS ChemDraw(R) version 4.5 For Microsoft Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and Windows NT (c) 1997, CambridgeSoft Corporation October 1, 1997 This Read Me file provides information not documented elsewhere about the ChemDraw application and known problems in the version 4.5 release. **NEW FEATURES** This version of ChemDraw (v. 4.5) contains the following new features: NEW FEATURES IN CHEMDRAW 4.5 (For more information see ChemDraw Help) * REACTIONS: Support for atom-atom maps in reactions, including autogeneration of atom-atom maps. Atom-atom mapping information is saved to CDX, SKC, and RXN files, and transferred to the clipboard. The automatic mapping routine also recognizes and marks bonds that change during the course of a reaction. (Pro/Ultra only) * TIFF file export, with a selection of resolutions, bit depths, and compression formats (Pro/Ultra only) * PNG file export (Pro/Ultra only) * Windows 95 interface, including standard interface elements of Windows 95, including new open/save dialogs, toolbars, etc. (Windows only) * Chemistry-related menu items consolidated into a new Structure menu * Atom label parsing routine is greatly enhanced * New Marquee selection tool in addition to Lasso tool * Now able to select a single unlabeled carbon atom * Document window expandability * Better handling of isotopes, including metastable isotopes * Better handling of atom lists and not-lists * Enhancements to SMILES generation, including descriptors for cis/trans stereochemistry * Enhancements to MDL MOLFile generation, including transmission of atom and bond properties. (Pro/Ultra only) * An assortment of display modifications, particularly relating to joins between bold/wedged and non bold/wedged bonds and relating to display of structures in other applications, including PowerPoint. * Support CMYK Encapsulated PostScript **LAUNCHING AND QUITTING** - Launching ChemDraw under Japanese Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 will result in the Windows NT blue screen. Microsoft has promised to fix the problem with Service Pack 4. (This only applies to the Japanese international version of Windows NT 4.0.) Until Service Pack 4 is available, please only use up to Service Pack 2 or download the hotfix from: http://www.microsoft.com/japan/products/ntupdate/NT4SP3/postsp3.htm The hotfix is named GLYPFIXI.EXE or something similar. - The Nickname.dat file is read upon launch and resaved upon quitting (if modifications have been made). This opening and/or saving of the nickname.dat file may cause the launching or quitting process to take longer than expected. To speed up the launch of ChemDraw remove unneeded Nicknames (List Nicknames command in the File menu). **MEMORY** - The minimum operable configuration for ChemDraw requires 8 MB of physical RAM and at least 12 Mb of virtual memory. ChemDraw will run with less physical memory, but you may experience various problems. - The higher the color depth (number of colors available) of your video driver the more memory will be required by ChemDraw. This may cause memory problems with large magnifications at color depths of greater than 256 colors. Try increasing available memory (swap space) or decreasing the number of colors available. **FONTS** - The names of fonts stored in Style Sheets may not match the names of the same fonts on international systems. In this case, a strange font may result when you create a caption or atom label. The solution is to select the desired caption and label fonts on the international system, then resave the Style Sheets (*.CDS). - Windows 3.1: Some systems may not have the Arial or Times New Roman fonts installed. In this case, a strange font may result when you create a caption or atom label. The solution is to open an untitled document (*.CDS), set the desired caption and atom label fonts within the document, then resave the document as a Style Sheet (*.CDS). **PICTURES** - Foreign pictures pasted into a ChemDraw document created using the Macintosh version of ChemDraw will disappear when the document is opened using the Windows version of ChemDraw. The reverse is also true, foreign pictures pasted into a ChemDraw document created using the Windows version of ChemDraw will disappear when the document is opened using the Macintosh version of ChemDraw. - You cannot copy a ChemDraw picture and a foreign picture together in a single selection and paste it into other applications. - ChemDraw pictures pasted into Microsoft Word are NOT editable using Microsoft Draw. - Copying large ChemDraw pictures to the Clipboard can be slow. If you try to paste the ChemDraw picture into another application before ChemDraw is through imaging the Clipboard, you may receive an error. ***DISPLAY*** - If you are experiencing strange display behavior, try changing your display type to the standard VGA video driver that comes with Windows. The display type can be changed using the Display control panel (Win 95/NT 4.0) or using the Windows Setup (Win 3.x/NT 3.x). If this resolves your problem, contact the manufacturer of your original video driver to see if there is an updated version available. - Structures pasted into other applications may appear larger or smaller than they do in ChemDraw. However, printing occurs at 100% (if the application has a ruler function, compare the relative size of an inch). ***MISCELLANEOUS NOTES*** - For information on transferring ChemDraw files between platforms and between differing versions of ChemDraw, see our technical support web site: http://www.camsoft.com/support/chemdraw.html - Printer drivers are usually the cause of many printing problems. If you are experiencing a printing problem, make sure you are using the latest printer driver for your printer before contacting technical support. - Registration codes and serial numbers are not remembered by ChemDraw if you register under Windows 3.1, and then reboot under Windows NT. The reverse is also true. - Opening a file that is already open by another user gives an incorrect alert. The incorrect alert reads "The file could not be found". - Windows NT: Certain printer drivers cause launching of ChemDraw and opening of ChemDraw documents to take several seconds. - Windows 3.1: If you set your CD_ITEMS_PATH variable in your chemdraw.ini to a CD_ITEMS directory on a RAM Disk, you will have to re-register ChemDraw every time you launch it. - Windows 3.1: If you receive a message "File Error: Cannot Find COMCTL32.DLL" this is an indication that you have an old version of Win32s installed (prior to 1.3). Please reinstall ChemDraw from your original master disks to resolve the problem. TECHNICAL SUPPORT ----------------- To report bugs or ask questions, please use one of the following addresses.
