Supported operating systems
The following operating systems are supported by MPM: Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
Installation
To install Mobile Phone Manager properly, you must have administrator rights on your PC, i.e. the user should be registered with the "Administrator" group.
Also go through the following steps after installation (while still logged in as Administrator):
- Start up MPM
- Connect your mobile phone to the PC with the supplied USB data cable and wait for the USB driver to be installed. MPM should then detect your phone automatically
- If you intend to use Infrared connection, unplug the USB cable, activate Infrared and put the device in front of your Infrared adapter. Again, MPM should detect your phone automatically
After all drivers are installed, Mobile Phone Manager can be used from any account on the PC.
Additional notes for SX1 users
MPM Mobile Phone Manager has no built-in support for SX1 mobile phones. To use MPM with SX1, please download and install the MPM SX1 Add-on, which can be found on http://www.siemens-mobile.com/sx1.
GPRS modem connection via USB cable (65 series only)
When using a USB cable to connect your 65 series device to the PC, please make sure that Windows properly recognized the phone and attached it to a COM port in the modem settings before starting GPRS Modem Assistant (the recognition may take up to 10 seconds).
Otherwise GPRS MA will not be able to find the modem and start the device search again.
GPRS modem connection using Siemens SX1
For SX1, GPRS connections can only be made via Infrared or Bluetooth. GPRS connections via COM or USB are not supported!
Infrared
Activate "Modem via Infrared" in the SX1 (Menu > Setup > Modem > Connect via Infrared) and put it in front of your Infrared adapter. A windows driver should be automatically installed for Siemens SX1. Now start the Siemens GPRS Modem Assistant SX1 software and press OK to have the program automatically search for devices. After a short while it should find the SX1 on the COM port which was assigned to your Infrared adapter.
If the automatic device search is not able to find your device, you can also click on "Advanced settings" and specify the COM port yourself.
Bluetooth
Switch on Bluetooth functionality in your SX1 (Menu > Setup > Bluetooth) and pair your device with the PC. For smoother operation, also allow any connections to be performed automatically (set paired device as authorised in SX1 via "Options" menu, resp. corresponding option in your Bluetooth software). Now start the Siemens GPRS Modem Assistant SX1 software and press OK to have the program automatically search for devices. After a short while it should find the SX1 on the COM port which was assigned to the Dial-up Networking profile of your Bluetooth adapter.
If the automatic device search is not able to find your device, you can also click on "Advanced settings" and specify the COM port yourself.
Note to users with WIDCOMM stack: Please make sure you have the latest Bluetooth driver installed and that all local Bluetooth services are started automatically, especially the Fax and Dial-up Networking services. You can modify these settings by right-clicking on the Bluetooth icon in the task bar and selecting "Advanced Configuration" from the popup menu. Go to the tab "Local Services", select properties for Fax service and enable automatic startup. Also enable automatic startup for the Dial-up Networking service.
To see if Dial-up Networking via Bluetooth is installed correctly, double-click the "My Bluetooth Places" icon on the desktop, open "Entire Bluetooth Neighborhood" and find your SX1. Double-click on it to list all available services and then double-click on "Dial-up Networking..." to set up a connection for testing. If a window with login information is shown, press "Cancel". Now try to set up a GPRS connection by following the instructions above.
MPM and BlackBerry Desktop Manager
Known problems
When MPM Phone Explorer is running, it is not possible to establish a connection with BlackBerry Desktop Manager,
even when MPM has been shut down because the corresponding dialog was answered with yes. In these cases the
Phone Explorer has to be closed manually in order to enable the BlackBerry Desktop Manager to establish a connection.
The BlackBerry Desktop Manager can only establish a connection to a Neo when the BlackBerry-Software has been
started on the Neo. Before trying to connect the BlackBerry symbol has to be displayed in the Neo-Screen.
What should not be done
A MPM (Email-)SmartSync should not be done with an Enterprise-Neo with the PC/Outlook that
has the Enterprise-Email Account. The Emails would get mixed up.
Gigaset SL44 and Gigaset S44
Known problems
Only the following file-types with the given extensions are supported for file-exchange between PC and mobile:
Known Issues
"The RPC Server is unavailable" error while using SmartSync
If you encounter an error "The RPC Server is unavailable" while using SmartSync with Microsoft Outlook98 or Outlook2000, please follow the instructions in the seperate SmartSync - OL Config ReadMe on how to configure Outlook for use with Siemens SmartSync.
Installing MPM on different drives (SmartSync)
If you previously had installed MPM on drive C: and uninstalled it, please start and quit Microsoft Outlook once to make sure the SmartSync add-in is properly de-registered. Without this step subsequent MPM installations on a drive other than C: may cause problems in Outlook ("The add-in could not be installed or loaded").
Backup Settings
UNC pathnames (ie. "\\server1\bckup") can not be used to specify the Backup Root Directory. Instead, map the shared folder to a network drive and use the drive letter to specify your Backup directory.
Problems with personal firewalls (with installed MPM SX1 Add-on)
This information only applies to MPM Mobile Phone Manager with installed SX1 Add-on:
It might be necessary to configure your personal firewall to give mRouterRuntime access to at least the following ports: 3000, 3002 and 3004. If problems persist please give mRouterRuntime access to all ports. mRouterRuntime is a component belonging to Mobile Phone Manager, it is located in C:\Program Files\Intuwave\Shared\mRouterRunTime.
Windows XP hangs with a blue screen when using SX1 via USB connection
Due to a bug in the Windows XP USB driver you may experience crashes or blue screen reboots when transferring larger amounts of data via USB cable to or from your SX1. All versions of Windows XP up to Service Pack 1 are affected. Microsoft is aware of this problem and a patch will be included in Windows XP SP2.
If you encounter this problem, please contact Microsoft Support quoting Knowledge Base (KB) article Ref 833680 to obtain a hotfix (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;833680).
MPM Help is not displayed correctly on Windows 98 systems
If you have problems opening the MPM Help files on Windows 98, you may have to download and install Microsoft Security Update Q323255. The Update can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WUCritical/q323255/default.asp
